Today’s quick review: Zombieland. In an America overrun by zombies, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), a former college shut-in, discovers an unlikely set of friends in Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a boisterous survivor; Wichita (Emma Stone), a con artist with trust issues; and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), her younger sister. Together the group embarks on a cross-country roadtrip to reach a California amusement park rumored to be free of zombies.
Zombieland is a zombie action comedy with a great sense of humor and polished execution. Zombieland takes a small cast of well-drawn characters, a bevy of undead, and a few simple locations along America’s deserted highways and weaves them into an entertaining, original comedy. Stylish presentation, a light tone, and creative zombie kills make Zombieland a satisfying watch. The only thing missing is much of a plot, a minor issue compared to the movie’s strengths.
Zombieland takes a cavalier approach to the zombie apocalypse. Gas, food, and ammunition are plentiful, and the zombies are mainly a threat for the unprepared or outnumbered. Easing up on the usual zombie-related drama lets Zombieland indulge in some fun, such as Columbus’ matter-of-fact narration, his extensive rules for survival, and Tallahassee’s search for the world’s last Twinkie.
Give Zombieland a shot when you are in the mood for something light and thoroughly entertaining. Zombieland’s high quality and easy sense of humor give it broad appeal. Skip it if you are averse to zombie-style gore or comedic violence. For a zombie comedy with a British sense of humor and a dash of fatalism, check out Shaun of the Dead.
7.7 out of 10 on IMDB. I give it a 7.5 for great characters and original humor.
